Wikipedia to offer website building tools
Founder of online encyclopaedia wikipedia Jimmy Wales has announced the launch of a new free service to help people to create websites.
Through his company Wikia, Mr Wales will offer free software, storage and network access which will enable users to build their own community websites.
Bloggers and other website operators will even be able to keep all online advertising revenues generated from the sites that they create.
However, websites built with the free tools will need to contain a link to Wikia, which will make its revenue from internet advertising. It is thought that this system will provide a challenge to other sites that offer services for free in return for a share of advertising revenue.
Mr Wales told Reuters: "It is open-source software and open content. We will be providing the computer hosting for free, and the publisher can keep the advertising revenue."
He said that ever-lowering prices for computers, storage and network access would make the service a success as it was becoming "more and more practical and feasible" to use the internet in this way.
The project furthers the model used by Wikipedia, which is also open-source and can be added to and edited by anyone. More than 400,000 articles have been posted so far on Wikia sites.
