Visitor boost of 65% for UK commercial websites
online retail web sites in the UK saw a 65 per cent boost in visitors between November 20th and the 26th 2006, new figures from web analytics firm comScore reveal.
The company looked at internet shopping activity, defined as visits to secure web pages, at top UK, French and German retail sites in the run-up to Christmas, starting on October 30th.
All three countries had Amazon and Apple Computer appearing in their list of top sites, which demonstrates the global appeal of the brands, comScore stated.
online retail visits in the UK in the week ending November 26th were led by online superstores, with GUS, owner of Argos, taking the biggest share of visitors (11 per cent).
Amazon web sites followed with ten per cent, followed by supermarket Tesco with seven per cent, then Littlewoods Shop Direct with six per cent.
Managing director of comScore Europe Bob Ivins said: "These gains show that consumers armed with high-speed access and positive online retail experiences are increasingly comfortable shopping online.
"As online spending continues to grow and account for a larger percentage of total consumer spending, the growth in online shopping could be the difference between a good Christmas and a great Christmas for many online retailers."
