Small businesses 'can benefit from good IT'

An expert in the information technology sector has stated that small businesses can benefit from good IT and it can allow their employees to work more flexibly.

Business manager for Small Business Computing Brett Marino has suggested that small businesses can attain the flexibility and functionality of large corporations through the implementation of good technology.

"The latest craze among small businesses is complete hosted networks: this provides organisations with remote connections to hosted servers," he remarked.

Mr Marino added that virtual private networks can be set up outside the office so that businesses can access their email and data from home.

He also advised businesses to employ the expertise of an experienced IT team, rather than sort out problems themselves. Using an external IT company is a more "pragmatic" approach which "saves money and makes expansion less disruptive in the future".

According to Mr Marino, problems with technology happen in smaller companies as they cannot afford to maintain an IT network, nor do they have the time or resources to undertake such a project.

Recent research by BT Business, reported in Computing, discovered nearly half of small UK businesses do not have a dedicated company website.
