Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is broad term that encompasses a number of related activities, however all have a central purpose: to increase a website’s potential to generate enquires and sales through web technology. SEM is a strategic activity which aims to raise the visibility of a website in search engines. These may include pay per click campaigns, link building and online press release and article distribution as well as search engine optimisation. Search engine marketing is a rapidly growing industry, with many companies choosing to allocate higher proportions of their marketing budget to SEM than ever before. Google dominates the industry by providing the pay per click advertising platform AdWords to present relevant advertising alongside organic search results, along with AdSense, a contextual advertising program that delivers advertising tailored to content within its huge content affiliate network.
