Online advertising to grow 28.2% in 2007

Global internet advertising spend is set to grow by as much as 28.2 per cent next year, compared to a growth of only 3.9 per cent for advertising in other media, it has been predicted.

The claims were made following new research from media services group ZenithOptimedia, which expects the internet's share of total adspend worldwide to grow from 5.8 per cent this year to 8.6 per cent by 2009.

In the UK as well as Sweden and Norway, the internet already attracts more than ten per cent of adspend and the company said that by 2009, it expects that the medium will do so in ten markets, including the US, Japan and Australia.

The internet has its highest share in the UK, where it will attract 13.5 per cent of adspend this year, the report shows, and is ahead of the US "by at least a year or two" in terms of the development of online advertising, Yahoo!'s Terry Semel recently claimed at a conference.

Growth of the internet has been dramatic, the report notes, taking the medium only 11 years to overtake cinema and outdoor in the advertising stakes.

By 2009, online advertising will have also overtaken radio advertising, the firm predicts.

Paid search was found to be the largest type of internet advertising, with the gap between search and display advertising widening.
