Online advertising boosts retailers' revenue

High street retailers are rapidly gaining more hits from online shoppers as advertising boosts their visibility on the internet, according to a report by market research company comScore.

In November, retail companies such as Woolworths, HMV and Marks&Spencer held three quarters of the positions on the top 20 gaining sites list.

During the pre-Christmas shopping frenzy, all but one of the top 20 gaining sites was a shopping site.

However, EBay, Amazon, GUS and Tesco were the only retail sites listed in the top 20 most viewed sites for the same month.

Microsoft topped the table for popularity, closely followed by Google, both achieving 25,000 unique visitors.

Bob Ivins, the managing director of comScore Europe commented: "As expected, due to the holiday shopping season, the sites posting the strongest gains versus last month were predominantly online retailers, with GUS (Argus) leading the pack, up 24 per cent from October to November."

With such a huge potential market available to those willing to splash out in online marketing, the visibility rewards look promising, particularly for smaller businesses wanting to save costs.

According to media forecaster ZenithOptimedia, one fifth of advertising revenue will be spent online by 2009, prompting more consumers to shop from the comfort of their own homes.
