November sees 148% surge in online gifts sales
The Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) has reported an enormous 148 per cent rise in online sales of gifts this November.
The organisation said that its IMRG Gifts Index, which tracks online sales of items such as flowers and gift-wrapped goods, that are often sent directly to the recipient's address, had surged last month in the run-up to Christmas.
November's figures were in line with earlier predictions that British shoppers would spend £7 billion online in the ten weeks before the big day.
IMRG CEO James Roper said: "In 2000, the first year in which the IMRG collected hard online sales data, Christmas trading was worth well under half a billion pounds, and we thought that was huge at the time.
"Now we can see that the e-retail market is just getting into its stride, with large potential for long-term growth."
Further figures from the group revealed that e-tailing sales hit £3 billion in a month for the first time ever in November, with an average of £4.57 million made in online payments every hour.
This was around 45 per cent more than in the same period last year, and half a billion pounds higher than October's total.
