North-east firms 'invisible on the internet'
Many firms based in the north-east of England have a minimal internet presence, according to new research.
A study by the Business Development Agency found that retail-based searches of sites such as Google and Yahoo! led to mainly national brands, high street stores and price comparison sites.
However, north-east based independent retailers and businesses were said to be "almost non-existent" on search engines.
Pascal Fintoni, from the north east Regional Portal, urged firms in the area to make themselves more visible online to net a greater share of the consumer market.
He said: "Businesses have spent thousands of pounds creating their websites so it is vital that they are easily found online.
"What's the point in having a website if nobody can find it?"
Mr Fintoni added that businesses should invest in sales and marketing strategies such as online PR and search engine optimisation.
The increased use of the internet by consumers was highlighted by recent figures from the Interactive Media in Retail Group, which stated that Britons spent £7.66 billion online in the ten weeks before Christmas.
This is 53.8 per cent more than during the same period of 2005, in which consumers spent £4.98 billion on the internet.
