MySpace pushes Yahoo! off top spot as most-viewed web pages
Fox Interactive Media websites, boosted by social networking site MySpace, have pushed Yahoo! sites from the top spot as the websites most viewed by US internet users.
Figures from web analytics firm comScore revealed that in November, 39.5 million Fox pages were viewed by US internet users, up from 38.7 million in October.
Yahoo!'s audience, however, declined from 41.6 million pages in October to 38.1 million in November.
MySpace was purchased by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp earlier this year for the sum of $580 million (£332.85 million) with the aim of driving more internet traffic to other Fox sites.
However, Yahoo! played down the significance of the figures, saying that while Fox sites had seen more web pages viewed, Yahoo! had more unique visitors than its rival, with 130 million.
Yahoo! also said that one of the reasons that it had been overtaken by MySpace in terms of page views was that it now used web 2.0 technologies including Ajax, a kind of java which meant that not as many pages needed to be generated in order to show information.
A spokeswoman said: "These technologies enhance the overall user experience, but do not either generate a page view or qualify to be counted as a page view while the user is engaged with the product."
