Microsoft pushes targeted online ad sales

Microsoft has begun to target customers with online advertisements, according to reports.

Using information from its Hotmail e-mail service, Microsoft plans to generate more revenue from directed marketing, following in the footsteps of Yahoo and Google.

Consumers are targeted using the information that they enter into search engines allowing more relevant online advertising to be sent to their e-mail addresses.

The information is relayed back to Microsoft, using cookies, or small data files and allows a picture of the client’s profile to be built up.

Reports state that Microsoft has already begun to collect and process data from Hotmail users' internet searches.

The company do not intend to pass their information onto third parties, but to preserve the privacy of their customers while passing on information that they feel may be of interest.

Targeting online advertising in this way led to a 76 per cent increase in clients clicking on advertising material, studies have revealed.

Adam Sohn, the online services director at Microsoft said: "We think that if we can provide the better experience - in advertising as well as content - people will spend more time on our network."
The technology has undergone about one year of testing prior to release, reducing the chances of glitches in the early stages of use.
