Microsoft clamps down on phishers

Microsoft has brought legal proceedings against 129 phishers in Europe and the Middle East, it announced.

The global software giant announced its Global Phishing Enforcement Initiative in March, aimed at targeting thieves who try to steal bank account details and other personal information on the internet.

Phishers commonly send emails purporting to be from major brands or financial institutions, luring internet users to fake sites and asking them to verify passwords and other details.

In the 129 cases that Microsoft became involved with, all featured criminals building fake Hotmail and MSN.com sign-in pages in order to take personal information.

The company said that 97 of the lawsuits had been criminal investigations, but several had been less-serious civil suits lodged against teenagers, with fines of between €1,000 and €2,000.

"It's certainly enough to make their parents very angry," a spokesman told Reuters.

Turkey was the country with the largest number of phishers, 50, followed by Germany, which had 27 offenders and then France, which had 11.

Microsoft said that it had used web-crawling software as well as customer complaints to find the areas where the phishing was taking place, before more traditional methods were used to identify the offenders.
