Marks and Spencer's tops website usability poll

marks and spencer's has come top of a new poll for website usability, compiled by web accessibility consultants Webcredible.

The company surveyed the websites of 20 top high street retailers, measuring them against criteria including web site navigation, search capability and how products were displayed.

marks and spencer's came top of the poll, followed by the Early Learning Centre and Mothercare, while clothing retailer Top Shop, as well as Clinton Cards, were placed near the bottom.

"Independent research shows that as many as 83 per cent of internet users leave a website because they can't find what they are looking for," the BBC quoted Trenton Moss, director at Webcredible, as saying.

"Our study threw up some real surprises - Top Shop doesn't even provide a search function and, incredibly, the Clinton Cards website gives users the option to add products to their basket without actually letting them know how much they cost."

Official figures from the Office of National Statistics revealed that online shopping gave British retail a boost in October, with non-store retailing 3.3 per cent higher than in the previous three months.

The Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) has predicted that £7 billion will be spent online in the UK in the ten weeks before Christmas day.
