M-commerce tipped as next e-retailing trend
Japan is seeing an explosion in the use of shopping by mobile phones, signalling an "m-commerce" consumer boom according to news reports.
Reuters reports that Japan's e-commerce sector is one fifth the size of its US counterpart, with a value of US$30 billion.
However, the Asian nation's m-commerce market is rapidly expanding and drawing ahead of other developed nations', with a current value of US$3.5 billion and explosive future growth forecasted.
According to Jupiter Research global m-commerce revenues stood at US$22 million, with Asia contributing over 40 per cent.
In Japan the m-commerce market tripled between 2002 and 2005, while the US and Canada are unlikely to reach its current $4.6 billion size by 2009.
Meanwhile, says Reuters, traditional retailers are feeling the pinch as business is lost to m-commerce operators like Xavel, with its popular mobile shopping site fashionwalker.com.
The phenomenon is only set to accelerate as Japan's mobile firms, like NTT DoCOMo and KDDI, roll out faster new generation 3G services.
