Google to provide space data
Search engine giant google will be adding to its google earth offering with detailed photographs and video from space.
Google has teamed up with US space agency Nasa in a deal that will see Google bringing services such as Nasa weather updates, 3D maps of the moon and Mars and virtual space flights to internet users.
Nasa administrator Michael Griffin said: "This agreement between Nasa and Google will soon allow every American to experience a virtual flight over the surface of the moon or through the canyons of Mars."
He added that the agreement aimed to make Nasa's work in space exploration "accessible to everyone".
Under the terms of the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on many research projects, while Google will help the space agency to organise and search through its vast amount of data.
The director of strategic business development at the Nasa Ames Research Center Chris Kemp said that although the agency had collected information for the benefit of everyone, a lot of information was scattered around the public domain and difficult for non-experts to understand.
"Nasa has collected and processed more information about our planet and universe than any other entity in the history of humanity," he said.
