European workers wile away the hours online

Europeans are spending an increasing amount of time surfing the net and trawling search engines for the latest websites when they should be at work, according to a new survey.

Figure released by recruitment agency Monster show that web use for personal emails, interactive websites and instant messaging reached new levels in offices during April.

Its study of European employees indicated that eastern Europeans were among the worst offenders, with nearly half of all Hungarians - 48 per cent – using the internet for personal purposes at work.

For those sending personal emails, Germans were among the most persistent culprits, with 24 per cent sending or receiving messages during working hours.

A quarter of all respondents said they spent time "chatting" on their computer, with Britons among the most enthusiastic about this service.

One-third of Brits and Irish said they enjoyed chatting with friends electronically during working hours.

Significantly, electronic chat has now outstripped verbal communication with just seven per cent of those surveyed saying they use the telephone to speak to friends during working hours.

The poll canvassed the opinion of more than 10,000 employees who use Monster's online recruitment services.

The domination of the personal computer in the workplace and the proliferation of social networking sites as part of the Web 2.0 phenomenon have been among the driving forces behind a shift in communications at work.

Alongside applications like instant messaging and email, social networking and the use of the web to interact with friends has meant more and more people go online to kill time when at work.
