Companies 'spending more on internet advertising'

Many firms have increased their budget for advertising on the internet, according to new research.

A survey carried out for the online marketing Show found that one in five firms now spend more than half of their overall marketing budget to advertise on the internet, reports New Media Age.

In addition, almost half of respondents said they plan to consult with a digital agency within the next year to increase their presence on the internet.

Companies said that they would be investing in areas such as email marketing, search engine optimisation and banner advertising.

In addition, businesses said they planned to invest more heavily in emerging marketing channels such as social networking websites.

This follows recent research by the internet advertising Bureau which found that British companies spent an overall total of £2 billion on online marketing during 2006.

Companies in the UK were found to be investing their money in search engine marketing, display ads, classified ads and directories and email marketing.

This year's online marketing Show is being held later this month at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London.

The event will offer business owners the chance to hear advice on how to raise their online profile and make their advertising campaigns more successful.
