Commercial websites warned of festive security threats

commercial websites have been warned that they could face a rise in security threats over the Christmas period.

Bee Ware said that product websites would be bombarded by Christmas shoppers this year, with figures from the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) indicating that online sales will hit £180 million per day leading up to the festive period.

However, the security firm said, commercial websites may also be bombarded with an increase in security threats, with 70 per cent of websites vulnerable to cross-scripting, which it claims is the most serious threat to data compromise.

The firm said that a lack of focus on web application security, less rigour in web programming, increasingly complex software and restrictions on web security testing were conspiring to make flaws in web software one of the most reported security issues of the year.

Even when regulations were in place to support web application security, Bee Ware said that many firms were unaware of them or merely paying lip service, with less than five per cent of commercial organisations currently compliant with the PCI standard.

"With the move to greater use of web technologies the issue of web application and web services security cannot be ignored," said Bee Ware's international marketing director Malcolm Skinner.

"These technologies lead directly to personal information in databases and intellectual property - a far more important risk issue to tackle than the latest virus."
