BT: Small businesses are not operating online
Many small businesses operating in the UK are doing so without a website or even an online footprint, it has emerged.
According to BT Business nearly half of small businesses have no dedicated company website, Computing reports. Companies that are completely detached from the internet altogether make up a fifth of the respondents from the survey.
Ivan Croxford, the head of market development at BT Business, insists that businesses will begin to see the benefits of using the latest technology.
"We are communicating and sharing thoughts a lot more, using email, blogs and social networking sites in both our business and personal lives," he comments.
Despite these figures, the study also found that 52 per cent of businesses with fewer than 50 employees use the internet as their main marketing tool and customer interaction base and three-quarters of companies agree that online activities are vital for business in the future. In fact 63 per cent of respondents feel the internet will allow them to contend with bigger competitors.
These statistics come after the British Retail Consortium warned small businesses that they could lose out to larger retailers if they do not utilise the internet as an extra selling channel.
