Why can't I just put Wikipedia content on my site?
Good SEO demands a lot of unique content, and for businesses with limited resources – either time, money or both – it can be very tempting to just lift copy from somewhere else on the web and place it where it's needed. Wikipedia is such a prominent location for lots of focused content that it is one of the most abused sources.
When we receive content for optimisation, we always do a quick check to make sure that the content isn't present anywhere else under somebody else's name. There are two reasons we do this.
One: Reproducing somebody else's well written, keyword laden content and claiming that it's original, with the intention of increasing search engine rankings is simply unethical.
Two: Google sees it the same way, and if it detects that content has been reproduced on a site with a view to exploit it for search engine benefit (or as Google puts it: "with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users"), that site will be at best penalised, at worst, removed from Google's index altogether.
