What kind of ROI can I expect from social media?
This question is a hot topic for debate as social media gains traction in the business world. Twitter and Facebook are entering the mainstream after several years of only being used by early adopters and very narrow demographics of people. Many businesses think that social media is the key to increasing sales, but applying traditional business techniques and attitudes to social media investment can lead to disappointment.
Traditionally, ROI in business is measured in terms of time / money invested directly compared to sales gained from that effort. If Google Adwords are used for example, it is very easy to see how many sales are being generated by a measurable financial investment.
Social media efforts are difficult to measure in the same way. So difficult in fact, that many businesses that participate in social media are urging others to stop looking at it in terms of traditional, monetarily based ROI, but instead view social media as another kind of networking, or a long term activity to build relationships that may lead to business later on.
Social media can be used for other goals than sales. It can be used to deliver real time customer service (many technology companies use Twitter very well for this) and it can be used for market research, if you are participating in networks of people that form your ideal customer base. Neither of these can easily be linked to a traditionally measured ROI.
Social media can be a time sink, but in certain circumstances, it can lead to great results. However, predicting what return on investment you can expect is very difficult. At the very least, returns should not be anticipated on a short term basis.
