What is metadata?
In the context of a web page, this is information about the page which is unseen by the user, but is used by search engines and web browsers. Metadata can contain a wide variety of information, including how a web page is encoded and what the page is about.
Three parts of metadata are important in terms of SEO: the title tag, the keywords tag and the description tag. The title tag (link) determines what is displayed in the blue bar at the top of the browser. The keywords tag tells the search engine what the author of the page content considers to be the most important words on the page, and the description describes this in one or two sentences.
Collectively, these metadata tags help a search engine to identify the most important parts of the page content, and by doing so, make it more likely for the page to be indexed and found on those keyword phrases.
